What is a ‘screening programme’?
LymphVision offers a screening programme to give you peace of mind. Often, many people following breast cancer or other surgery, are aware that a consequence of treatment can be lymphoedema. By undertaking screening, lymphatic conditions which can occur as a result of cancer treatments are recognised as early as possible. We do this by offering repeat lymphofluoroscopy assessments over the period in which these conditions are most likely to develop. The screening programme consists of an initial consultation followed by an assessment every 6 months for a 24-month period, however longer packages are also available to suit your requirements.
Why is screening important?
Research has found that some cancer treatments, such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy put patients at a higher risk of developing lymphoedema. As lymphoedema is a chronic condition, early recognition ensures that the symptoms are managed early and often before you can feel any changes yourself. Through repeated assessments with our team, changes to the lymphatics will be detected using our Near Infra-red (NIR) camera which allows us to see your lymphatics working in real time. Recognizing the condition early is crucial in the bid to prevent the long-term, more serious effects.
What are the benefits of screening?
The screening programme offers two major benefits. In the case of seeing a healthy and normal lymphatic system, you can be reassured that you do not, at that point have lymphoedema. Our trained team will be looking for any signs of dysfunction of the lymphatics or signs they are struggling.
If early lymphatic changes are identified, you can be assured that the early identification, followed by efficient management, will likely substantially reduce the severity of what can be a very debilitating condition. We will ensure you receive a swift referral onwards and can recommend a private therapist or surgeon. In addition, the mapping of your lymphatics will mean that we can guarantee the best out of your Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) and can also advise where to head for unbiased support and guidance. Some patients may opt for lymphatic surgery which can be discussed with one of our partner surgeons.
What does the programme include?
The screening programme will start with a comprehensive consultation and assessment with Clinical Nurse Consultant, Jane Wigg. Jane will work through your medical history and can answer any questions you may have. The initial consultation will include the first Lymphofluoroscopy scan, where we will assess for any signs of developing lymphoedema. If the scan is clear, you will be invited back for the second assessment 6 months later to repeat the assessment. If at any of the assessments Lymphoedema is detected you will be provided with advice and support regarding the most appropriate treatment. This may include simple and self-lymphatic drainage which can assist well at this early stage, compression or other forms of treatment including surgery, if this is your desired option.
